In 2008,which is supposed to be the first time that I get to attend or celebrate Sinulog,I never got the chance to go out because of some lapse in communication and understanding with my friends.Instead of getting drunk and wasted in Gen.Maxilom Ave. or Jones Ave. I was in the convenience store of a gasoline station near the place where I used to live.I was all alone devouring on a siopao and a RTD iced tea whilst looking at them other people who were also at the convenience store feeling the Sinulog spirit.(read: alone)
In 2009,when I was back to being a student, one of my classmates birthday was on the same day Cebu celebrated Sinulog. We had a sumptuous lunch and had a little drink in Ayala mall but never stayed long as we still had to study for our upcoming midterms that time.
I was not here in Cebu during the Sinulog 2010 but I felt like I was also part of the celebration as my eyes were glued on the tv set the entire day of that third Sunday of January as I watched each and every contingent that danced at the Abellana grounds. It was by far the most comfortable Sinulog for me as I don't have to walk miles and bathe with sweat to be able to enjoy and feel the Sinulog spirit. Instead I was on my own bed rolling and tossing and the only time I jumped out of it was when it was time to wash the dishes.(read:in the comforts of Lola's house)
This year,it was again a different experience. My friends thought of setting up a booth where we can sell some merchandise. Fortunately that materialised! We were selling bottled water, beer, handcrafted earrings, hand sanitizer, wet wipes and pork cracklings.
Anyways, the weather has not been so good ever since the year started. It's either there's drizzle or heavy downpour but most often than not the sky is overcast. It was raining so hard the day before the Sinulog Sunday. I was even dripping with rain water as my friend and I braved the heavy downpour from Fuente Circle to their house which is by estimate a kilometer away. Imagine walking and stepping into dirty water that came out of overflowing esteros and sewer.
I've also made sure the stuff that I'd be bringing won't be dripping with water should rain be pouring down from heavens that day. So the moment I woke up I immediately gathered all my stuff and put them one by one to a ziploc.
What's in my backpack.
green and pink hoodie
extra shirt
planner(which got wet a day before) and IDs
water bottle
basic essentials (blue kit)
instant coffee,tea and cheese
wheat bread
alcohol
blue rain coat
rag
I brought my younger sister with me to our booth and not even an hour after we arrived the rain started coming. Being the
the younger sister
It was a rainy Sinulog all throughout the day and until we wrapped up our booth later that evening but nevertheless I had so much fun. The experience was great and one for the books. It may have rained but no amount of rain could dampen our spirits.
Till next year! =)
